In holistic dentistry, we take into consideration the patient’s general health as well as their dental health. What you eat, your dental history, and other health habits are taken into account. The mouth is a mirror and a reflection of the entire body, because they are interrelated. There are numerous articles explaining the link between gum disease (periodontal disease) with systemic conditions such as heart disease, respiratory problems, diabetes, and arthritis. He uses this as a guiding principle in his holistic dentistry philosophy. Dr. Mobasser takes the whole person into consideration, while treating dental problems at their biological origin. His goal as a holistic dentist is to treat and reverse dental problems before they become complicated and costly to fix.

Proper Nutrition
Sometimes called “biocompatible dentistry” or “biological dentistry,” holistic dentistry seeks to avoid the destructive effects of dental infections and periodontal diseases. One way this is achieved is through proper nutrition, good oral hygiene, and preventive dental visits to prevent further destruction of gum disease. Holistic dentistry emphasizes a balanced intake of nutrient-rich foods. A proper diet of organic foods is an excellent way to ward off dental problems, which can be caused by too many acidic and/or highly processed foods. Gum disease can be also a result of an imbalanced diet, causing inflamed, red or swollen gums. Holistic dentistry, with its emphasis on prevention, seeks to treat periodontal disease at its root cause, and stop dental complications before they start.
Root Canals
Holistic dentistry also seeks to avoid problems caused by root canals. In some instances, it may be necessary to redo root canals, or possibly extract the tooth, if they are causing problems. Patients experiencing holistic dentistry are encouraged not to undergo root canals in the first place via preventive treatment offered at the holistic dentist.
Dr. Mobasser has not used mercury fillings since the inception of his practice in 1980. Mercury fillings, otherwise known as amalgam fillings, can produce dangerous toxins in the body over time due to marginal leakages. In fact, the mercury vapor released from mercury dental fillings is absorbed very rapidly and thoroughly in your body, primarily by inhalation and swallowing. For that reason, Dr. Mobasser recommends removing faulty mercury fillings and replacing them with natural-looking bonded materials, such as porcelain inlays and onlays, which are inert, meaning that they do not cause allergic reactions. These materials not only look more aesthetically pleasing, but are safer to use.
Occlusion (or Bite)
The bite is one the most important aspects of all dentistry and dental health. An unbalanced bite can cause neck, back, and facial pain, as well as headaches. In fact, bite problems (occlusal disease) are often signs of physical imbalance. Occlusal disease can cause teeth sensitivity, gum recession, abfraction in the root area, worn down teeth, and many other problems. Dr. Mobasser performs a thorough bite analysis to promote symmetry and harmony for the patient’s bite.

Dental Extractions
When it is necessary to extract teeth, steps should be taken not to leave bone cavitations. Consequently, depending on the extraction site, bone grafts might be necessary. Cavitations can cause severe resorption on a patient’s bone topography and can be a focal point of infection.
Dr. Mobasser believes in combining the most natural approach possible with state-of-the-art technology. Depending on the patient’s needs and desires in relation to holistic dentistry, Dr. Mobasser can address many significant aspects such as the use of mercury free-fillings, material compatibility testing, innovative isolation techniques to eliminate mercury exposure, the use of oxygen, the role of nutrition to oral health, the relationship of gum disease to other physical problems, and structural components (such as TMJ, postural asymmetry, uneven bite).
