How to Tell If Your Veneers are Well-Made

Many patients have questions about porcelain veneers (dental veneers) and what to expect when they decide to have them done. Below are a few questions anyone who has recently had porcelain veneers done should ask themselves.

How Do Your Veneers Feel?

If your veneers feel thick and bulky, they shouldn’t. If they have been made and applied properly, then they should look and feel like your natural teeth. Veneers feel too bulky if the dentist has not reduced the proper amount of tooth for a snug, natural-looking fit. The problem can also be traced to poor lab work or poor planning from the beginning. Also, due to lack of communication, between the patient and the cosmetic dentist. In my cosmetic dentistry practice, I listen to the patient’s wants and make sure I can deliver the final product. If not, then I will not start the procedure.

How long have you had your veneers?

Well-made veneers can last as long as 7-10 years. In my practice, however, many patients have had their same cosmetic dental work for more than two decades, a fact that makes me smile. There are several factors to veneer longevity, including the bonding technique, the patient’s occlusion (or bite), and the type of wear and tear the veneers undergo. The final bonding of the custom veneer is very technique sensitive and there are many ways to place the veneer on the tooth. There are some shortcuts and time-saving techniques that some dentists use which jeopardizes the veneers longevity. Patients with veneers who use their teeth inappropriately can expect them to wear out more quickly.

However, if you take care of your porcelain veneers, practice good dental hygiene, and attend follow-up visits, then there is no reason why your veneers shouldn’t last 15, 20, 25 years or even longer.

How Snug Do Your Veneers Fit?

If you have ever had a dental veneer fall off, then they have not been correctly bonded or your bite may need an adjustment. This type of procedure is very technique sensitive, requiring a cosmetic dentist with experience and an artist’s eye for detail. Failed bonding is usually the result of trying to place the veneers on a contaminated surface. Before each and every bonding procedure, I make sure the tooth surface is completely free of bacteria, saliva, debris, water, oil, or other substances that will lead to a less-than-ideal outcome. Also the cosmetic dentist should check the porcelain veneer on a microscopic level to ensure that it is free of bacteria and contamination, plus to see that it is etched correctly so it will bond to the tooth surface.

Do Your Porcelain Veneers Maintain Their Color?

If your teeth are discolored or if they show an uneven color where the veneer meets the natural tooth, then the veneers were not bonded correctly. The discolored surface is usually bacterial contamination leading to cavities and it’s due to improper bonding techniques. Discolored resin cement or stains invading the margins of your teeth where gaps are present can cause this kind of discoloration. An expert cosmetic dentist should make sure that the tooth is reduced properly. Most of the preparation is on the enamel rather than the dentin, because since the bond to enamel is superior than dentin.

Are Your Veneers as Dazzling as the Day They Were Applied?

Expert cosmetic dentists can fix the mistakes of other dentists. If the look of your veneers do not match your dream smile, then they can removed and redone. Although this is a difficult process, it can be done with the right combination of technique, experience, and artistry. Since 1980, I have made it my mission to provide the best cosmetic dentistry services I can anywhere in the world.
