We all know we need to brush, floss and rinse. Even so, most of us only brush about one-third of the recommended time; and most of us treat flossing as something that we don’t have time for.
Flossing removes plaque and bacteria from between teeth and below the gumline, where your toothbrush just can’t reach. Regular flossing prevents periodontal disease, a serious threat to your oral health.
A survey revealed that three-fourths of respondents eat twice or more a day at work. Interestingly, only 14 percent cleaned their teeth afterwards, even though 90 percent thought a healthy smile was important to their appearance.
If you’ve invested in such cosmetic dental procedures as teeth whitening or the application of veneers , bridges , dental implants , etc., why not make a daily investment in proper dental hygiene .
The best way to make a habit of flossing is to establish a routine.
• Wrap about 18 inches of floss securely around your middle fingers.
• Hold your index finger firmly and leave about half-an-inch length of floss between them.
• Gently ease the floss between your teeth. Be sure to press lightly against each side of each tooth, forming a C shape.
• Ease the floss up and down several times. Remember to go below the gumline, where you’ll find all the bacterial action.
• When you hear a little squeak, you’ll know the plaque is gone.
Make sure you choose a floss that works best for you, whether thick or thin; flavored or unflavored; waxed or unwaxed — Just make sure you do it every day.
