Sedation Dentistry

Sedation dentistry is used to provide a more relaxing dental experience. Studies show that a significant number of people – as much as 30% of the population – avoid the dentist due to their dental phobia. Oftentimes, this fear of the dentist can cause people to miss regular checkups and adversely affect their dental and medical health.

At Dr. Mobasser’s practice, however, we strive to make your dental visit as relaxing and pain-free as possible. We are the rare breed of cosmetic dentists in Los Angeles and Beverly Hills who offer sedation dentistry with a full array of anesthesia, from oral medication to general anesthesia.

What makes our practice unique is that we only see one patient at a time – there is no nervous waiting in the reception area. For patients with dental phobias, they can contact us to set up a special appointment.

Sedation Dentistry Methods

Sedation dentistry can be done in a variety of ways, with or without injections.

  • Oral medication. Sedatives such as Halcion, Valium, Xanax, or inhalation agents can be taken prior to the procedure without injections to reduce anxiety ahead of time. Although this sedation method works well for some patients, they are often not appropriate for patients who can’t physically or behaviorally cooperate with the dental procedures. In these cases, intravenous (IV) sedation or general anesthesia are other sedation solutions.

  • Intravenous (IV) sedation. This method delivers sedatives via an injection in the hand or arm. At Dr. Mobasser’s Celebrity Cosmetic Dentist practice, this form of sedation is delivered by a trained anesthesiologist.

  • Patients with severe gag reflex or fear of the sound of dental handpieces (drills) or instruments in their mouth benefit greatly via IV sedation administered by an anesthesiologist during their dental procedure to complete their dental needs.

No matter what method you take, however, a responsible caregiver is required to go with you to the appointment and drive you home after it is over.

    The Advantages of Sedation Dentistry

Sedation dentistry can help many patients calm their fears about a trip to the dentist. In fact, many patients, after receiving sedation dentistry, do not remember the procedure at all. In some cases, patients think that the procedure took place in a few minutes when it actually took hours.

Perhaps the biggest advantage of sedation dentistry is that it can help patients overcome their reluctance to see their cosmetic dentist for complicated dental procedures, such as full-mouth reconstruction or dental implants. If you are hesitant to go to a cosmetic dentist to improve your smile, you shouldn’t be. With sedation dentistry, Dr. Mobasser and his highly trained staff can make your dental procedures virtually pain- and anxiety-free.
