I just answered that question in whanda, thought it might help others,

The question was:

WHY DO I HAVE TEETH SENSITIVITY AFTER TEETH WHITENING?

WHY DIDN’T  MY TEETH WHITENING LAST?

In my opinion, do not use over the counter whitening products , having said that you need to see a cosmetic dentist, to check if you do have any micro fractures, or micro cracks,? is there any recessions of gums or gingivae? if so you need to be tested re sensitivity!! or evaluate if you need dental bondings on the root area PRIOR to start your teeth  whitening!! is there any abfractions ?
also if there is internal or genetic discoloration ? if so whitening would not help much.
are your gum pockets in good shape? Is there any inflammation of gums, or gum disease prior to teeth whitening procedure?

and is there any leaking fillings in your mouth!
sometimes teeth whitening can cause more damage unfortunately , depending on the concentration of the bleach product.,, and does not help your wants at all !! also depending on your eating and drinking coffee , tea, red wine , etc …. ,you might be defeating the purpose of receiving your white smile.
First thing make an appouintment with a Cosmetic dentisit for a complete evaluation.

DENTAL EMERGENCIES TIPS

Posted in Aesthetic Dentistry, Cosmetic Dentist, Dental Bonding, Dentist, Full Mouth Reconstruction, Porcelain, Porcelain Inlays & Onlays, TMD, TMJ, dental cosmetics, smile on August 5th, 2010 by admin

Lets face it, accidents can happen, and especially when it comes to our teeth, SMILE and mouths, they can be pretty frightening. Being careful is good a prevention, but being prepared makes you confident about and possible oral health emergency. Its important to know when home care will suffice and when a trip to the dentist is necessary. If you are ever in the situation that makes you feel like you need to speak with your dentist, call the office, your dentist should provide a day to night time number. If you call during non-business hours, voicemail will give instructions about how to reach the on-call dentist. With that in mind, here are some guidlines to help you through common situations:

Toothache/Sore Gums: Rinse with warm water to remove any food or debris; if you notice anything lodged between teeth, floss to remove it. Take an over the counter pain medication (but never apply the medication directly to teeth or gum), see the dentist if the pain persists.

Chipped or Broken Tooth: Save the pieces, if you can, rinse them thoroughly. Apply an ice pack or cold compress to the swollen lip or gum tissue near the chipped tooth to prevent swelling. If the area is bleeding, apply gauze for ten minutes, or until the bleeding has stopped. Call your cosmetic dentist immediately. You can possibly have a dental bonding , porcelain inlay or porcelain onlay treatment done to salvage your tooth.

With recent advancements in full mouth dentistry and cosmetic dentistry, you might not lose your tooth. If there’s enough remaining healthy tooth structure, there are several treatment options that may eliminate the need for root removal. While the success of these procedures depends on the severity of the break, it’s worth asking about options other than complete removal. I highly recommend you contact your cosmetic dentist.

Knocked Out Tooth: Depending on the situation, find the tooth, make sure not to hold it by the root, and rinse it briefly with warm water. If possible, gently reinsert the tooth into the socket and bite down on gauze or cloth to keep it in place. If you cannot reinsert it, place it in a container of milk or mild salt water solution. Call your cosmetic  dentist as soon as possible-if treated within 2 hours, the tooth may be salvaged.

Soft Tissue Injuries: Soft tissues such as gums, cheek, lips, and the tongue tend to bleed heavily, only because the tissue contains a great deal of blood flow. To control the bleeding, first rinse with warm, mild salt water solution. Apply pressure with gauze or a moistened towel for 15 to 20 minutes. Afterwards, to reduce swelling and help stop residual bleeding, apply a cold compress to the outside of your mouth. In the event of a serious soft tissue injury, in which the bleeding is profuse or the damage is visibly traumatic, its best to stay calm, keep applying pressure, and go to the emergency room.

Tooth whitening products  are  available for home use to remove external stains by abrasion or by bleaching teeth. Their safety and effectiveness vary according to the type used.

Kits that contain abrasive agents can give you a white celebrity smile initially by removing surface stains, but they can be harmful over the long run because they accelerate the natural aging process, in which the enamel of teeth is slowly worn away to reveal the yellow dentin behind it, or can cause recessions on gums (meaning the roots will be exposed) and consequently cause TOOTH ABFRACTION on the roots of teeth concurrent with sensitivity to cold and air.

It is of utmost importance to have the abfraction checked by the COSMETIC DENTIST ,so the sensitivity be stopped. there is various treatment that can help further breakdown and abfraction of the roots, including but not limited to, DENTAL BONDING, or possibly DENTAL VENEERS or LUMINEERS.

iF YOU DO HAVE ANY EXISTING SENSIVITY ,I HIGHLY RECOMMEND NOT TO DO ANY TEETH WHITENING OR BLEACHING OF TEETH ,till all the  necessary treatment for the sensitivity is rendered.

Teeth bleaching or TOOTH WHITENING PRODUCTS,are usually carbomide peroxide or hydrogen peroxide derivitives, and of course with different concentration. In my opinion you should be screened for your gums, root sensitivity, any micro cracks, microleakage possibly from your fillings , or abfractions by a dentist before you put whitening and bleaching products in your mouth.

In summary I highly advise you to have a full check up and consultation with an EXPERT COSMETIC DENTIST, before you do any kind of teeth whitening, to avoid further damage to your precious teeth and smile.

Beverly Hills Cosmetic Dentist
Dr. Anthony Mobasser

“I have served the Beverly Hills area as a cosmetic dentist since 1980. Since that time, my primary intention is to keep my patient’s teeth for the rest of their lives first, and then enhance and beautify their existing smile.

Being a cosmetic dentist in Beverly Hills is unlike being a cosmetic dentist anywhere else in the world. With so many movies stars, moguls, and media personalities, you have to be at the top of your game. That’s why I pride myself on my practice’s world-class .service

At Celebrity Dentist, you receive the best in optimum dental health , artistic, aesthetically pleasing cosmetic dentistry. Here I am sharing a little insight regarding drugs and medications that you might be taking ,that can affect your teeth, gums, and the treatment you want to get done.

Studies show that two out of every five adults take some type of medication that could have dental related side effects. Depending on  your  age, this chance can be  doubled.
In addition to prescribed and over-the-counter drugs, vitamins, minerals, and herbal supplements can also cause oral health issues .The side effects can range from dry mouth  (causing cavities or tooth decay ) to inflamed gum (gingivitis ) to taste altercations and possibly bone loss (periodontal disease).

Some of the most common side effects from medications that affect oral health include:

.Dry Mouth , in which can lead to bad breath , or HALITOSIS

.Abnormal Bleeding

.Altered Taste

.Inflammation, Mouth Sores, or Discoloration of the soft tissues in your mouth

.Enlarged Gums

.Cavities

.Teeth and Gum color changes (stains),

Some drugs can cause intrinsic stains of teeth, meaning ,teeth whitening products  can not alter the color any more, and you might need dental veneers or porcelain veneers to mask the discoloration.

It is best to have the COSMETIC DENTIST , or DENTIST ,to be in communication with your physician and you ,in order to provide optimal health care. It is of utmost importance that you do fill the health questionaire properly, and know your medication and dosages.
