Your dentist can diagnose more than gum disease and cavities.
A study by the Academy of General Dentistry reveals 63-percent of Baby Boomers are unaware that oral symptoms can serve as a key-indicator to adult-onset diseases.

As you age, you’re at greater risk of developing osteoporosis, heart disease and Type 2 diabetes. Research reveals these diseases often are discernable in the mouth, making your dentist a vital player in diagnosing non-dental diseases.
Findings of the survey revealed the following results.
DIABETES
• 95 percent of diabetics also suffer from Type 2 diabetes, a condition often contracted after age 45.
• Bleeding gums and bad breath are symptoms of diabetes.
• Only 29 percent of Boomers surveyed were aware of the connection.
OSTEOPOROSIS
• Our bone mineral density lessens with age.
• An estimated 44-million Americans are at risk for osteoporosis.
• Menopausal and post-menopausal women are at greatest risk.
• Dental x-rays may reveal the first stages of bone loss.
HEART DISEASE
• Heart disease is the number one killer of Americans.
• Our risk of developing heart diseases triples after the age of 45.
• A painful jaw is a warning single that you’re at risk for a heart attack.
• Gum disease can negatively impact a heart condition.
While many Americans may not be aware of the link between these diseases and their oral health, the AGD survey revealed a quarter of Boomers had experienced one or more of tell-tale signs of the connection.
YOUR DENTIST’S ROLE
The Academy’s survey revealed the majority of Baby Boomers fail to take advantage of their dentist’s role as an intrinsic partner in their overall health care. Although 78 percent understand the connection, nearly half fail to make the recommended twice-yearly visit to their dentist. Almost one-third see their dentists only in an emergency.
TALK WITH YOUR DENTIST
According to the survey, nearly 65-percent of Boomers don’t talk with their dentist about their overall health. This discussion is vital as many dental conditions can exacerbate problems that impact your entire body.
