The ultra-fast Zoom!T Chairside Teeth Whitening System, manufactured by Discus Dental, Inc., is a professional product that uses a hydrogen peroxide-based tooth whitener. Zoom has been popularized by its use by cosmetic dentists on the hit ABC-TV show "Extreme Makeovers."
Once the special gel is applied to your teeth, your cosmetic dentist will activate it by directing a special light to your teeth. The process actually breaks down stains in tooth enamel.
The light unit includes an infrared filter, which helps minimize the amount of heat generated at the surface of the tooth during the treatment. The light simultaneously illuminates the entire area of treatment, including both upper and lower teeth
The specific treatment breaks down into six steps.
• Your dentist will check your teeth and gums to ascertain if they are healthy enough for the process.
• He'll then complete a short preparation that isolates your lips and gums.
• The next step is application of the Zoom whitening gel to your teeth.
• The gel is then activated with the low-heat light.
• Your dentist will repeat this process two more times for the full effect.
• Finally, you'll receive a five-minute fluoride treatment.
Each application requires about 20 minutes. Pre- and post-preparations and activities round out the full treatment to the 90-minute mark.
To continue the bleaching process, your dentist will send you home with a tray-based product. This home treatment uses a tray tailored to the shape of your teeth that you fill with a special whitening gel. The active ingredient, carbamide peroxide, allows oxygen to enter the enamel and bleach all colored substances.
The Zoom teeth whitening system also is available for home use. Known as the "Zoom Take-Home Whitening System," it works under the same principles as the professional product, except it works over the course of three nights.
Although the process can't whiten fillings, crowns and bondings, Zoom should whiten your teeth by six to 10 shades.
