Jan. 18, 2007, Beverly Hills and Los Angeles – Dental anxiety is a very real problem fro many people. Some experience such severe anxiety they develop a dental phobia. It's a very real problem faced by nearly 50 percent of the American population.
Patients who continually search for the perfect dentist actually may be forestalling the resulting appointment and time spent in the chair. a condition that may contribute to 50 percent of the U.S. population not receiving regular dental care. Dental anxiety also may lead to such responses as white-knuckle, dental-chair grip, sweating, faintness, dizziness, ringing in the ears, etc.
Top aesthetic dentist Dr. Anthony Mobasser offers a variety of successful sedation methods to help patients cope with nearly any type of anxiety.
The primary cause of phobia, quite understandably, is the fear of pain. Other triggers may include:
A fear of shots;
Hearing and feeling the dreaded dental drill; and
The typical background noises and smells of a dental office.
Less common, but equally contributing factors are patients who have:
A strong gag reflex;
Difficulty becoming numb
Sensitive teeth; and/or
Have had a previous, traumatic dental experience
