Feb. 16, 2007, Los Angeles and Beverly Hills - Children need to do much more than just brush their teeth twice a day if they want to avoid restorative dentistry later in life. But how should a parent choose their battles. Herewith some dental tips for kids.
Naturally, brushing at least twice a day is non-negotiable. A parent should help their children for at least one of these brushings until they have the necessary skills and dexterity to do a complete job.
Floss daily. Even baby teeth need to be squeaky clean and nothing says squeaky like a good flossing.
Use a fluoride toothpaste. Fluoride truly does make teeth harder and less prone to decay. If your water supply is not fluoridated, consider chewable fluoride drops or tablets. Even when your water supply is fluoridated, you may want to consider drops or tablets as children rarely drink enough tap water.
Visit your hygienist or dentist at least once every six months for a full cleaning and exam.
Children should first visit their dentist beginning by at least age 2 or 3. Early visits will allow your dentist to catch any early problems and recommend any special treatments.
Begin orthodontic treatment as early as possible. There's less likelihood of permanent teeth needing removal if you start early. If a baby tooth must be removed early, due to decay, ask your dentist to install a space-maintainer to keep the other teeth from drifting.
Don't put your infant to bed with a bottle of any liquid other than water. The acids and sugars in milk and juices can quickly rot an infant's teeth with extended exposure.
Older children should wear a mouth guard when playing sports.
Teens should avoid mouth piercings that can permanently break, chip and ruin teeth.
Remember, when it comes to your child's teeth, prevention and early treatment are the keys to a lifelong, healthy smile.
