While the language of cosmetic dentistry is more accessible than some other medical specialties, it still requires an occasional explanation.
Listed below are a few terms you likely will find useful when visiting your cosmetic dentist.
Impaction
Teeth that are partially or completely unexposed and wedged against a bone, soft tissue or another tooth. Impaction precludes the eruption process.
Implants
These fixed dental appliance are used to replace a tooth or teeth and the tooth root. Implants anchor bridges, dentures and artificial teeth.
Impression
A mold made of your soft tissues and teeth
Incision and Drainage
The surgical opening of an abscess to drain any pus
Incisors
Your four lower and front teeth, with the exception or your cuspids or canine teeth.
Inlay
A porcelain or resin filling that is bonded into place for the restoration of a broken or decayed tooth.
Interproximal
The surfaces of your adjoining teeth
Interocclusal
The space between your lower and upper teeth
Intraoral Camera
These small video cameras are used to view and magnify any oral problems
Jacket
A front-tooth crown, usually made of porcelain
Laminate
Produced in a dental lab, these thin porcelain or plastic veneers are bonded to your tooth or teeth.
Laminate Veneer
Laminate veneers are ultra-thin porcelain resin shells that are bonded to the enamel of your front teeth
Laminating
The procedure by which ultra-thin composite-resin or porcelain veneers are applied to your tooth or teeth
Laughing Gas
Nitrous oxide is an odorless inhalation agent that mildly sedates a patient while reducing anxiety.
Lesion
Bodily tissue injury caused by trauma, infection or neoplasm
Local Anesthesthetic
Used to partially or completely eliminate pain in the immediate area of injection or application or injection
Low Lip Line
When your widest smile barely reveals the bottom edges of your upper front teeth
