Soda's Sugar and Carbonating Acids Erode Teeth

March 26, 2007, Los Angeles and Beverly Hills - Sugar isn't the only soft-drink content that negatively impacts our teeth. The phosphoric acids and/or citric acids found in most drinks create their own problems.

Exposure, even for a short time, erodes teeth: Long-term exposure can cause significant enamel loss. Interestingly, a study from the Academy of General Dentistry revealed root beer is less harmful because it lacks these carbonating acids, although it does contain sugar.

"My patients are shocked to hear that many of the soft drinks they consume contain nine to twelve teaspoons of sugar and have an acidity that approaches the level of battery acid," said AGD spokesperson Kenton Ross, DMD, in a press release. "For example, one type of cola ranked 2.39 on the acid scale, compared to battery acid which is 1.0."

Dr. Ross recommended patients consume fewer soft drinks and limit their intake to meals. He also advised drinking sodas with a straw. This reduces the drink's contact with our teeth.

While cola drinks can darken teeth, AGD researchers concluded non-colas create more erosion. This is because citric acid is the most popular acid used in non-cola drinks.

The research also found a significant difference in erosion between sugared and diet colas.
"The bottom line," Dr. Ross stressed, "is that the acidity in all soft drinks is enough to damage your teeth and should be avoided."

Dental erosion:

  • leads to loss of tooth structure;
  • refers to the action of the acid on the entire surface of the tooth; and
  • isn't the same as dental cavities as cavities and tooth decay are usually limited to cavity-prone areas.
