Tooth Contouring and Reshaping a Simple Process

Feb. 2, 2007, Los Angeles and Beverly Hills -- Remember when the only way to fix a bad smile was with braces, dentures or those plastic red lips?

Modern cosmetic dentists can now select from a large toolbox of tricks to, excuse the expression, turn that frown upside down.

Tooth reshaping, also known as tooth contouring, is just one of the many rapid and attractive treatments now available. Reshaping can correct crooked, chipped, cracked, grooved or even overlapping teeth in a single session. In some instances, it can even substitute for braces.

Contouring is a matter of millimeters. Top cosmetic dentist Dr. Anthony Mobasser can make subtle changes in your smile with just a few millimeters of reduction here and a few millimeters of tooth-colored laminate.

BEST CANDIDATES
Because reshaping requires the removal of tooth enamel, contouring first requires you have normal, healthy teeth that won't be weakened by such procedures. To ensure the best results, Dr. Mobasser will only make minor changes or combine the process with veneers or bonding.

PROCESS
Tooth reshaping begins with a series of x-rays that allow Dr. Mobasser to evaluate the size and location of the pulp of each tooth. This determines whether you have enough bone between your teeth to support them.

After marking your teeth to guide him in the sculpting process, Dr. Mobasser may use a laser or sanding drill to gradually remove small surface amounts. He'll then rub abrasive strips back and forth between your teeth to shape the actual sides of your teeth.

With a quick smooth and a polish, you're ready to go. The process usually takes one to three visits, depending on the extent of work required.

COST
Dental insurance usually covers tooth contouring only if required following an accident. Still, it is a relatively inexpensive procedure, averaging $50 to $350 per tooth.

PROS AND CONS
The tooth contouring procedure is quick, simple, painless, and inexpensive. However, the process has its limits. Dr. Mobasser can only remove a small amount of your tooth enamel or risk tooth breakage and decay.

If your teeth are uneven because you grind them, contouring is only a temporary fix. If you continue to grind, your teeth will again be misshapen.

Dr. Mobasser may recommend veneers, bonding or other procedures if more care is required.
